Zebra in the arid northern frontier at Samburu, Kenya
Kenya

Samburu

Overview

North of Mount Kenya the landscape turns arid, and the wildlife changes with it. Samburu holds the northern specials found nowhere further south: Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Beisa oryx and Somali ostrich. The Ewaso Ng'iro river cuts through doum palm forest and draws elephant and big cats to its banks. Visitor numbers are low, and the Samburu communities who own much of the surrounding land guide here.
